| 1986 National The Chase Magazine, Dec. 1986-Jan. 1987 Issue Page Twelve When the final entries were in for the All-Age hounds there were 582 entered for this 92nd Annual Field Trial. Among these 582 hounds were several affiliated association field trial winners and also several Futurity run backs. Here were assembled some of the best hounds in the USA vying for this coveted win, the outstanding win, in our estimation, of all. On this first day there were 12 hounds that Failed to answer meaning that 570 hounds were cast. The weather was very overcast and it looked like it might be going to rain any minute. It didn't take the hounds long to hit the woods and start after Reynard. As was the case in the Futurity, the running this first day was also spotted, but the good crew of judges managed to get some pretty fair scoring. When the sheets were posted that night 118 hounds had been scratched for one fault or another, which meant there were now 452 hounds eligible for the cast on Friday morning. ********* Friday dawned clear and cold-cold-cold. This was really our first morning of cold weather. This day 8 hounds Failed to answer and two were crated by the owner, so there were approximately 442 hounds that were actually in the running this day. Again the horsemen were the ones who got in where the running was, but there was scattered running around the different areas. When the sheets were posted 106 hounds had been scratched for faults. The National All-Age was fast drawing to a close and the hunters eagerly awaited the final day to see who would have the winning hound to add the word CH. to in 1986. ******** On Saturday morning 79 hounds Failed to Answer Roll Call, 30 answered Lost leaving 263 hounds eligible for the final day of the hunt. When the Master and judges started figuring the score sheet we found that 118 hounds had been eliminated that day, so the countdown was on. Many a disappointed person looked at the scratch sheet that day and saw their opportunity for a championship dwindle away. ******** Finally came time for the presentation of trophies and the winning hound was Fancy, owned by Hubert Hedgecock, High Point, NC. We are running the full score sheet, plus in case you can't read the score sheet we are having the top ten hounds set up by the printer. ********** Another National was now history and we move on to the other big field trials that are going on around the country, while anxiously anticipating returning to the 93rd National, the pride of all, in 1987. All in all, the fellowship among the hunters was the warmest we have seen in several years. We hope to see you among the participants next year. All Age Combination - Barefoot's Jet. HGA |
