Cork was a good size black and tan hound, bred by Pete Lear of Brodhead, Rockcastle
County, Ky. He was sold in 1916 to Dr. George Nye of Waverly, Ohio. He was run in the
Ohio State field trails and won when 15 or 16 months old. The way he had run for Dr. Nye
and this win started him well on his road to being a great stud hound. He was entered in
the National at Columbia, Tennessee, in 1918 and did place. The following year 1919 he
was sold to Mr. Jim Wilder of Alabama. Mr. Wilder only kept him a short time. He sold his
entire pack of hounds to Walker Kennels and in this pack was Cork.
Cork was put in the stud by the Walkers and stood there until his death. His stud fee was
eventually raised to 4100.00. A good many bitches were crossed on him at this figure.
He was run at the Paul Rainey field trials finishing second in the field and placed third on
the bench.
Cork was the sire of Lancelot Jacques' Mary Lee that won the National bench show. He
also sired the good running bitch of this same cross., R. J. Walker's Rant. Tip Top and
Jiggs by Cork out of Sid Tucker's Flash made hound history. Jiggs was sold to West
Virginia and was a proven stud hound there. Tip Top, a fine looking big red bitch was
owned by Ed Fox of Winchester, Ky. He refused big money for this bitch many times. She
died at Winchester, Ky. Many hounds today go back to Tip Top.
She was bred to Earl Combs, full brother to National bench champion Martha Collins, by
Glenn and out of a Scott bitch. From this cross came Sid Tucker's Flapper. She was
crossed on Tom Crowe and produced some real foxhounds, possibly the one most seen
in today's breeding is Big Sam Hussell. He was given to William Hussell when a pup by
Sam Wooldridge. He did a lot of winning on the bench and produced many good running
hounds.
The bitch Maud, by Scott, bred to Cork produced Tom Graham's Tim Chandler, Golden
Glow and others of note. Tim Chandler was the sire of Tim Ellis who stood for many years
at the Bob Walker Kennels. He was a top foxhound winning in several field trials.
Corable of Walker Kennels and Riley owned by H. H. Hooks of Texas were outstanding
hounds and both were bred to a great deal. Sam Ballard's My Lindy Cork was by
Corkable, she in turn was the dam of the good hound Hill Top Fair Play, also Pribble's Big
High Tail. He was the sire of many good hounds. War Dance and War Lad were also out
of My Lindy Cork.
